Testing & Prototyping Progress

Milestones
Timeline
Read about our progress milestones starting in September of 2024 and what we have planned for the future.
Spring:
April - June 2025
Goals:
We performed a finite element analysis on the inner socket of a transtibial prosthetic socket that we are developing using COMSOL Multiphysics. We analyzed and visualized various outputs including pressure distribution, strain, and displacement, which offered valuable insight into the mechanical performance of the socket under loading and will inform our design refinements moving forward.
We applied pressure loads to the inner surface of the socket to simulate the pressure exerted by the residual limb. The bottom inner part of the socket was fixed to replicate the attachment point to the larger prosthetic device.
Winter:
January - March 2025
Goals:
As various prosthetic parts are created, additional tests will be designed and conducted to evaluate mechanical integrity and durability. In the meantime:

-
Market Research: Research will be conducted to determine the market need, focusing on identifying the most relevant residual limb types that can be addressed and what features are feasible to implement.

-
Finite Element Analysis: Pressure mapping (via COMSOL) will be used to identify high-pressure areas and assess comfort during extended wear to optimize the socket design.

Milestone: Adhesive Strength Testing
-
Shear Stress Test: The adhesive bond between the pyramid adapter and PLA printed part was tested under shear stress using approximately 25 lbs of force for 30 minutes. Result: Successful.

-
Tensile Stress Test: The adhesive bond was tested under tensile stress with approximately 25 lbs of force. Result: Successful.
Fall:
September - December 2024
Research:
-
Leg Load Cheat Sheet: Based on existing studies, a cheat sheet of relevant load data on key parts of the leg during various gait cycles (tension and compression on the tibia) was compiled.

-
ISO standards: ISO standards for transtibial prosthetics were obtained and are being reviewed to ensure design alignment with industry guidelines and best practices.

Milestone: Adhesive Selection and Testing Setup
-
Various adhesives were researched to connect the pyramid adapter and PLA printed parts, and one was selected for use. A setup for adhesive strength testing was developed and built.
